Getting ready to drill soldier piles and also lift, turn and move the existing house up the hill at this Mercer Island project.

This kitchen island is one of the largest that we've ever built! And one of the neatest features is found in Interior Designer, Gail Monica Dent's design and clever use of the waterfall quartz surface treatment, seamlessly followed by rich brown lower cabinetry which open with merely a touch, ensuring both an architecturally interesting and clutter free line of sight straight to the elevated eating bar terminus. Other island features include: wine storage, food preparation areas, and ample storage. Another project element that we particularly like, is the baking center which can be neatly concealed behind retractable upper doors. The final detail to call-out today, is the incredible craftsmanship of our tile setter. The 3-d backsplash was mitered on the end run with such a careful hand by Vasil, from Greater Seattle Floors, it belies the amazing finish work!
Photographer, John Wilbanks, deftly captured this solution forward remodel. Take a look in our portfolio, in the days to come, for more details around this amazing project!
Recently, we took a break from our regular work schedules and shared a meal together along with some bowling! As our team grows, this was the first time a few of us had met new team members face-to-face. And, though it had been years since most of us had last tried to knock pins down--comically, it became clear, who among us have real talent and skill with the sport. We heard a quick confession of a college bowling class once upon a time, after Jason's first strike! That said, our sporting RCH team spirit and camaraderie included sharing nicknames new and old: Schmeeks, Apple Pie, Jiggy and one perfect orange bowling ball!
We look forward to meeting with you in the weeks and months to come!
Here (see above) are a few key words that RCH client's use to describe us, our relationship and project performance. We are grateful for the kindness of our clients and their trust & partnership!
If a picture paints a thousand words, how much more a video? Check out the latest update with one of our new construction projects underway. The time lapse video footage covers excavation to trusses from a two month timespan, in less than nine minutes!Read More

"It was a series of happy coincidences that brought us together with RCH and I am grateful." homeowner, Lynn K.
"You were thoroughly professional, but also friendly and caring. Your eye for detail and your expectation that things would be done right took so much off my plate and made it so I could trust you to see things through. You thought of things that never occurred to us, and then provided the solution on how to make it happen." At RCH, we strive for each and every project to reach this happy outcome!
In addition to attending the daily work within each of our roles here at RCH, our team also gathers regularly, to share updates and plans. In part, we participate in encouraging team building exercises, which often allow us a pause from our regular perspectives, to consider new ideas. Throughout this business quarter, we're reviewing The One Thing, by Gary Kellar. Essentially, learning the principle about how to "dismiss distractions and concentrate on your ONE Thing (which) stands between you and your goals. The ONE Thing is about getting extraordinary results in every situation." And, learning to apply the principle to any business or personal topics.
Let the brainstorming begin! The group-think allowed leadership to cast vision while aligning the team. And, with a few prompts on a specific business focus, RCH team members contributed terrific ideas and solutions. Remarkable!
We want to give a shout out to Andrey's Stucco & Masonry for their terrific stucco installation at our Innis Arden project! RCH Project Manager, Adin Houck describes this house as "A Mediterranean with a contemporary twist." Clean lines and controlled ornamentation will set the tone of this fantastic dwelling, which is perched on a ridge in Shoreline, overlooking the Puget Sound.
Stucco is both an attractive and durable exterior siding material that is relatively low-maintenance. The Pacific Northwest is notoriously soggy. Keeping this in mind, protecting the building envelope from moisture is essential. Stucco is a great solution for homes in our region. Think this product is limited to Spanish and Mediterranean aesthetics? Think again, stucco is used on many other prominent architectural styles: Mission, Craftsman, French, Italianate, Tuscan, Modern, Art Deco, Renaissance, Revival, Southwest Styles and Tudor. This popular concrete finish can even have color integrated into the mix prior to installation, resulting in a colored stucco that does not require painting, the color sets during the curing process.
We are excited to share more updates with you, as this project continues to shape up. Check back on the blog in the coming months.
The construction schedule on any given day, at a jobsite can create a congested and veritable beehive of activity. And, our current project in the Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline, WA is humming! Recently, an unusual group of visitors, a video production team from the Hydro-Blok company joined in with folks from Greater Seattle Floors, to capture the install of a fantastic shower pan that eliminates the need for a traditional circular shower drain, in favor of a trench drain option that can be curbless/lipless. The linear drain threshold ensures that water remains within the shower stall. This is project's master bathroom shower is both aesthetically pleasing and allows for ADA accessibility!

We are honored to announce that RCH is the winner of the 2016 Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties Remodeling Excellence Awards (REX/T-REX) in the category of Major Remodel Excellence Residential – Whole House/Rebuild with our Innis Arden Contemporary Project! Jason Jarman, CEO shared his gratitude “As a member of the MBA it is an honor to receive the recognition from those that truly know what it takes to create a remarkable project and relationships. “
Many thanks go to the project team which included Adin Houck, Project Manager; Darrin Peterson, Architect; and Beverly Bradshaw, Interior Designer. The team created a residence that capitalizes on a spectacular Puget Sound vista and sleekly anchors to a steep urban hillside. Transitions between indoor and outdoor living is harmonious with a generous use of glass, water & fire features, against the backdrop of an open floor plan. The top floor flows out onto a private terrace and the downstairs opens to an oversized patio giving the homeowner expansive use of the outside space. Oversized skylights above centralized stairs provide volumes of natural light between both levels of this 3,400 SF dwelling. Concrete, solid surfaces and natural stonework communicate stability and strength without sacrificing a welcoming, warm feel. The homeowner is treated to serene Olympic mountain range views throughout the home and fine finishes enhance its impressive art collection. Simple lines create a modern and fresh environment within the home while still connecting the homeowner to the natural environment without. The unexpected and unusual challenges on this project included careful and creative treatment in securing new supports within the original 1946 aged concrete structure; along with navigating neighborhood restrictions within an established homeowner’s association. Energy efficiencies include radiant heat within concrete flooring and top of the line insulated windows with bronze frames/flashings. Functional design improvements continue with concealed and integrated entertainment systems, low voltage, and automated window coverings. Special design solutions include a blackened steel fireplace which ventilates seamlessly between steel panels. A custom Corten Steel garage door further enhances the exterior and is operated with a hydraulic airplane hangar door lift. Vehicles roll along two pairs of steel ramps to enter the garage, from the grassy driveway. A shallow mote is located immediately in front of the garage door, and features both lighting and fountain features. Custom designed for the detail-oriented, this house delivers.
“Being remarkable is really a collaborative effort and when everything comes together you really do feel that you are leaving a mark on the world. The seriousness of that weight is only surpassed by the depth of the friendships that are created through the process.” - Jason Jarman
Congratulations to RCH Project Manager Adin Houck and his lovely wife Lynda, as they welcomed the birth of twin boys Skyler and Azul, this month. Mom and boys are doing well! Warmest blessings to each of you!
We are astounded, humbled and encouraged by the numbers of clients who return for additional projects with us at Rainier Custom Homes! In custom construction, the solutions are as unique as each client. We pick-up on existing client relationships and continue to help clients navigate the complexity and myriad of options with their custom projects—options that would marvel Henry Ford, who only first offered the Model-T Ford in any color, as long as it was black. With the advances in construction technology, we continue to help clients meet their particulars, needs and dreams.
And to us, our lifetime clients are so much more than a repeat customer. These folks actively decide to return to do business with us and go out of their way to do so. This dedication to RCH confirms that the qualities of trustworthiness, positive communication, willingness to learn, authenticity and engagement exist within the company’s DNA. Throughout the company’s 22 years in business, our goal to be remarkable is confirmed, as folks continue to partner with us—looking to us to deliver high quality projects with clear communication and integrity.
If you’ve got a project that you’d like to build, reach out to us today, we’d love to catch up with you and discuss your dreams!
Some of us can see what could be, as if as a transparency overlaid upon that which is. From our latest lakefront project, a dated brick fireplace was utterly transformed into a modern beauty. For those among us who struggle with design ideas, let this image illustrate what is possible.
"Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible." -T. E. Lawrence
